Sri Dewri Maa Mandir is located in Tamar 60 km toward south from Ranchi, the capital of Jharkhand. It is a very old temple of Goddess Durga. The main attraction is that the idol have 16 Hands (Normally Goddess Durga have 8 Hands). The temple is very old and now renovation is going on. It is made up of big stone put one over other without any cementing material in between. Dedicated to Solha Bhuji Goddess, an avatar of Goddess Durga, Dewri Mandir temple is located little outside the main city of Ranchi. Spread over nearly 2 acres, this old temple in Ranchi also houses an idol of Lord Shiva. Legend has it that whoever has tried to alter the structure of the temple has had to face the wrath of the gods and suffer consequences. Dewri Temple is also believed to be the only temple where 6 tribal priests, known as Pahans, perform rituals and offer prayers alongside the Brahman priests.

There are many legends related to this temple. According to some local beliefs, this Solahbhuji (16 arms) Devi Prachin Durga Mandir is in existence since the Mahabharata times. The Pandavas are believed to have prayed here during their period of ‘Agyatvaas’ (secluded exile). It is also believed by many here that Emperor Ashoka (Reigned India during 268 BC – 232 BC) and his army worshipped and implored for Maa Durga’s blessing for victory at Kalinga War in 260 BCE at this temple while marching en route Kalinga region. According to folklore, a king of Tamar, believed to be in the 18th century, once saw a dream. The goddess told him that there was a temple in Deori, where she must be worshipped. Villagers, as directed by the king, cleared a forested patch to find a small temple with a stone statue of Durga. Ever since the deity is worshipped here.

ஜார்கண்ட் தலைநகர் ராஞ்சியிலிருந்து தெற்கே 60 கிமீ தொலைவில் உள்ள தமரில் ஸ்ரீ தேவ்ரி மா மந்திர் அமைந்துள்ளது. மிகவும் பழமையான துர்க்கை அம்மன் கோவில் இது. முக்கிய ஈர்ப்பு என்னவென்றால் சிலைக்கு 16 கைகள் (பொதுவாக துர்க்கை அம்மனுக்கு 8 கைகள்) உள்ளது. கோவில் மிகவும் பழமையானது தற்போது புனரமைப்பு நடைபெற்று வருகிறது. பெரிய கல்லால் செய்யப்பட்டது. ஒன்றின் மேல் ஒன்று போடப்பட்டது. இடையில் எந்த சிமெண்ட் பொருளும் இல்லாமல். சோல்ஹா பூஜி தேவிக்கு அர்ப்பணிக்கப்பட்டது, துர்க்கை தேவியின் அவதாரமான, தேவ்ரி மந்திர் கோவில் ராஞ்சியின் முக்கிய நகரத்திற்கு வெளியே அமைந்துள்ளது. கிட்டத்தட்ட 2 ஏக்கர் பரப்பளவில் பரவியுள்ளது, ராஞ்சியில் உள்ள இந்த பழைய கோவில் சிவபெருமானின் விக்கிரகமாகவும் உள்ளது. கோவிலின் அமைப்பை மாற்ற முயற்சித்தவர்கள் தெய்வங்களின் கோபத்திற்கு ஆளாகி வினைகளை அனுபவிக்க வேண்டிய நிலை உள்ளது என்பது புராணம். பஹன்ஸ் என்று அழைக்கப்படும் 6 பழங்குடியின பூசாரிகள், பிராமண பூசாரிகள் உடன் சடங்குகள் செய்து பிரார்த்தனை செய்யும் ஒரே கோவில் தேவ்ரி கோவில் என்றும் நம்பப்படுகிறது.

இந்த கோவில் சம்பந்தமாக பல புராணங்கள் உள்ளன. சில உள்ளூர் நம்பிக்கைகளின்படி, இந்த சோலாபுஜி (16 கைகள்) தேவி ப்ரச்சின் துர்கா மந்திர் மகாபாரத காலத்தில் இருந்தே உள்ளது. பாண்டவர்கள் தங்கள் 'அக்யத்வாஸ்' காலத்தில் இங்கு பிரார்த்தனை செய்ததாக நம்பப்படுகிறது. கலிங்காப் பகுதிக்கு சென்றபோது இந்த கோவிலில் மாமன்னர் அசோகரும் (கிமு 268 - 232 கிமு) மற்றும் அவரது இராணுவமும் துர்க்கையின் வெற்றிக்காக துர்க்கையின் ஆசீர்வாதத்திற்காக வழிபட்டதாக இங்கு பலர் நம்பப்படுகிறது. நாட்டுப்புறத்தின் படி, 18 ஆம் நூற்றாண்டில் இருந்ததாக நம்பப்படும் தமார் அரசர், ஒருமுறை கனவு கண்டார். தேவி அவனிடம் டியோரியில் ஒரு கோவில் இருப்பதாக கூறினாள், அங்கு அவளை வழிபட வேண்டும். கிராம மக்கள் அரசர் அறிவுறுத்தலின்படி துர்க்கையின் கற்சிலை கொண்ட சிறிய கோவிலைக் காண காடுகள் நிறைந்த ஒட்டை அகற்றினர். இங்கு தெய்வம் வழிபட்டது முதல்.
